Canonical URL

A canonical URL is the one address you tell search engines to treat as the main version of a page when the same content is reachable at several URLs.

Filters, tracking parameters and listing syndication all create duplicate URLs. The canonical tag points them at one version so ranking signals aren't split.

Why it matters to an agent

Without it, Google may rank a filtered or syndicated copy of your page, or none of them.
